Malmö FF's international youth tournament Malmö Trophy has become an important part of Malmö FF's brand. But this year, it will not be held. According to Per Ågren, sports manager at MFF Youth and responsible for the tournament, there are two main reasons for the decision: The first is that plan 7 at the Stadium area, an important puzzle piece for the tournament's logistics, has not yet been completed. - We want to be together at the Stadium area, it's something that gives the tournament our identity. We have a restaurant here and it will be a better arrangement when everything is here, says Per Ågren. The second reason is that the agreement with partner We Love Football has expired. - We currently have no agreement, but we have an ambition to get started again. Probably we will do Malmö Trophy together with them again next year, he says. The decision to cancel the tournament was taken already around the year-end, when it became clear that Malmö Stadium and plan 7 would not be available in the summer. - It was not abrupt. It was something we took a stance on early, says Per Ågren. Malmö Trophy has been held on this weekend for the past three years and has been an important tournament for the club's 15-year-olds, where they could measure themselves against strong international opposition. Next year, Per Ågren expects to have big teams back in Malmö, but he also has other plans for the club's tournament activities. A summer version of the classic Skånecup is on the drawing board. The idea is to target grassroots teams, unlike Malmö Trophy, which focuses on elite teams. - It should be more of a cup for grassroots, over several days and something we can build on. We still want to get teams from outside and have them stay for a couple of days with overnight stays in schools, says Per Ågren. The location for such a tournament is not yet determined, but a dream location exists. - A large field near the sea. That's at least a small dream I have, says Per Ågren, but emphasizes that no dialogue with the municipality has yet been initiated. The project is still on the drawing board and discussions with partner We Love Football will be resumed after the summer. - We'll see where we end up, says Per Ågren. The club's ambition is to have two tournaments in Malmö already next summer.
