Malmo FF is in the midst of a major rebuild during the summer break. New coach Eirik Horneland and sport chief Philip Berglund present their plans for the future. It's a heavy, but inspiring work that awaits. It's a partially new MFF we will see when the season starts again against Degerfors away on July 4. The team is facing a major overhaul. Several players have done their job and will leave, while four to five new names will be introduced under the summer window. Building up during a burning season is always a risk, but after a sportingly weak May month where losses piled up, we have to admit that a change is needed. In the midst of this sporty turmoil, a members' meeting was held on Tuesday. It was a meeting that was needed, and the signals that came out of it leave a genuinely good feeling in my stomach. It's mainly about the people who are now leading us out of this slump: our new chairman Zlatko Rihter and our new sport chief Philip Berglund. For us who have followed MFF for decades, the chairmanship is something almost sacred. It's a task that requires a specific aura and a visionary leadership. Historically, we have been spared by giants. Eric Persson built the foundation, Hans Cavalli-Björkman professionalized the club, Bengt Madsen carried the pure passion, and Håkan Jeppsson transformed us into an economic and sporting powerhouse. They were men who wore the big, light blue suit with absolute authority. Therefore, we must also dare to be realistic and concrete about the era we have just left behind under Anders Pålsson's leadership. Between 2018 and the beginning of 2026, MFF had all the prerequisites in the world to take the next monumental step – to permanently secure our position as Scandinavia's leading men's team and play regularly in the European group stage. Instead, it became a period where the impact from the top felt anonymous. We didn't take the next step; we became worse, and the weak spring of 2026 was the end point of a vacuum where the visionary exchange was lacking. But after taking in how Zlatko Rihter and Philip Berglund presented their plans for the future on Tuesday, hope is rekindled. Rihter, with his heavy background from the international business world, speaks a language that breathes the type of seriousness and decisiveness we have lacked. He doesn't hide behind empty phrases. He is clear about what he wants, how he thinks the club should be led, and exactly how MFF should be taken back to the absolute top and out into Europe again. It's straight, it's concrete, and it's precisely the authority required to take over the legacy from Eric Persson, Hans Cavalli-Björkman, and Håkan Jeppsson. Together with Philip Berglund as sport chief, we now have a duo that feels ready to do what is required. They haven't had a honeymoon, but it's now – in the midst of the rebuild – that they directly have the chance to show their full capacity. MFF is and will always be the best, even when the table and the game temporarily claim something else. But for us to show it even outside the country's borders, we need to take the next step and make the necessary changes.
