Malmö FF have completed the signing of Norwegian central defender Stian Gregersen. The 31-year-old international joins from Atlanta United in MLS and has signed a contract until the end of 2029, as reported by Aftonbladet Sportbladet.
The club, currently sitting seventh in the Allsvenskan table, have brought in an experienced defender with 299 competitive appearances across four different countries. Gregersen, who will wear the number 2 shirt, is physically ready to play immediately and is looking forward to returning to Swedish football.
What experience does Stian Gregersen bring?
Stian Gregersen brings a long and varied career with him. He made his senior debut for Kristiansund BK in the Norwegian Cup at the age of 16. After progressing through Molde FK's youth academy and establishing himself in Norway's top flight with the club in 2017, he got his first taste of Allsvenskan during a successful loan spell with IF Elfsborg in 2019. Two years later he was sold to French side Bordeaux, where he played 73 league games in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 before moving to Atlanta United in MLS in 2024.
Gregersen also has 11 senior caps for Norway and was part of the squad for a World Cup qualifier this year. "Stian is a player with great experience who comes in and gives us both quality and security," says sporting director Philip Berglund.
How does Stian Gregersen fit into Malmö FF?
Malmö FF manager Gaute Helstrup gets a centre-back who describes himself as a strong duellist and a fast defender. Gregersen likes to play a high line and is good at stepping forward on the pitch. He is also considered a player who takes responsibility and drives those around him, a clear leader type.
The addition comes at a good time for a team that has conceded 30 goals in 18 matches this season. With a points tally of 26 and an inconsistent recent form of LWLWL, the team needs to stabilise defensively. Gregersen could be a key piece in that effort.
What does the signing mean for Malmö FF's season?
The acquisition of Gregersen is a direct reinforcement for the final part of the 2026 Allsvenskan campaign. The team is 16 points behind league leaders Sirius and faces a tough test when third-placed BK Häcken visit on October 18th. To climb the standings, better defensive performances are required.
"Already after the first meeting with Malmö FF and Gaute Helstrup I felt that this is exactly the way I want to play football," says Stian Gregersen. He is aware there is a match on Monday and is eager to get the chance in front of the home supporters at Stadion.
With a squad now bolstered by international experience, Malmö FF hope to turn the trend. Further information on the team's performances can be found on our stats page. The goal is clear: to improve the defensive organisation and pick up points in the remaining fixtures, which you can follow in our fixtures list.
