Malmo FF has confirmed that striker Emmanuel Ekong, 24, will undergo surgery after a failed transfer to Hajduk Split due to a medical examination. Ekong is now returning to the club to rehabilitate his meniscus injury from March.
What happened with the transfer?
Malmo FF and Hajduk Split had agreed on a transfer for Ekong, but the striker failed the medical examination. The club states that the previously known injury was detected during the examination, leading Hajduk Split to withdraw from the deal.
Why is Ekong undergoing surgery now?
Malmo FF's medical team previously assessed that Ekong did not require surgery, and he has been available for training and matches since May. However, the decision has now changed due to new circumstances. "In light of these new conditions, we have decided in consultation with Emmanuel to plan for knee surgery," writes Malmo FF.
What does this mean for Malmo FF?
Ekong has made four appearances for Malmo FF this year. The club currently sits in sixth place in Allsvenskan with 49 points (13 wins, 10 draws, and 7 losses from 30 matches). With a goal difference of +13 and 26 points behind leaders Mjallby AIF, Ekong's absence will be a challenge ahead of the next match away against GAIS on August 16.
