Erik Botheim has left Malmo FF with immediate effect to join Norwegian side Viking FK. The striker's move to the Champions League club was confirmed on Wednesday, according to a report by Aftonbladet.
Botheim signed a contract that runs until the end of the 2030 season. The guaranteed transfer fee is reported to be 41 million Swedish kronor, according to Norwegian TV2. In total, the deal could net Malmo FF close to 52 million kronor if all bonuses are achieved.
Why is Botheim leaving Malmo FF?
The transfer comes in the middle of a season where Malmo FF currently sits seventh in the Allsvenskan table. The team has 29 points from 19 games, with nine wins, two draws, and eight losses. Their recent form, WLWLW, highlights an inconsistency the club hopes to correct. Botheim has been a key part of the attack this year, scoring ten goals in 19 Allsvenskan appearances.
Sporting director Philip Berglund must now replace a key figure. Botheim joined the club and won both the Swedish league title and the Swedish Cup during his time in Sweden. However, a serious foot fracture in the 2025 season temporarily halted his progress.
What does the deal mean for MFF's finances?
The guaranteed sum of 41 million kronor is a significant income. The funds can be used to strengthen the squad for the final part of the season. MFF is 13 points behind league leaders Sirius and has a goal difference of +3 after scoring 33 and conceding 30 goals. Climbing the table will require more points, which you can track on our standings page.
"Dear sky-blue family. I want to start by saying a thousand thanks. From day one I have loved playing here," said Erik Botheim in a farewell message.
Where is Botheim going and what level will he face?
Erik Botheim is joining a Viking FK side that qualified for the Champions League this autumn. The Norwegian club has been drawn into a tough group featuring heavyweights like Stuttgart, Bayern Munich, Aston Villa, Sabah Baku, Atletico Madrid, Feyenoord, PSV, and Napoli. It will be a major challenge for the Swedish striker.
Even superstar Erling Haaland has commented on the move. "Never been so close to becoming a Viking supporter as now!!!" he wrote. The transfer thus gives Botheim a chance to prove himself at the absolute highest level in Europe this autumn.
What does MFF's immediate schedule look like?
Without Botheim, Malmo FF must adapt for their next fixture. The team faces BK Hacken at home on October 18th. Hacken currently sits fifth in the table, promising a difficult match. All information on upcoming matches is available on our fixtures page.
To handle the absence of Botheim, the manager may need to look at other options in the attack. You can review the composition of the current squad on our squad page. The next home game against Hacken will be the first practical test without the productive striker.
